Antique Edwardian Carved Bloodstone Ring, 15k Gold Dated 1905

So, every once in while someone tells me a story which makes me buy a piece that I otherwise likely would have passed on. One time it was a pendant made from a slice of the first transAtlantic cable. More recently it was this ring. I did notice the ring and picked it out of the case, I liked the smooth velvety feel, instantly recognizable as 15 karat English gold. I liked the stone too, and at first I thought it had some sort of design, but when I recognized it as having initials, I gently and somewhat reluctantly put it back in the case.

"Oh," said the nice lady behind the counter, "they're not initials. It's the symbol for a Victorian club called the Magic Circle." Well, I do love magic, and I knew that the Victorian's were big into clubs and magic shows, so my mind just took off from there and I purchased this lovely ring.

I came home and put this ring into stock eager to begin research on it. And I searched, and I searched, and I searched some more. There was indeed a Magic Circle in London, it was a magic club started in 1905 by the famous Victorian magician David Devant. Their first meeting was held at The Green Man pub in Soho in central London. However, I found no connection between this ring and that club. In fact the more I looked at this ring, the more I realized that these initials aren't even M.C., but rather C.M., most likely the C.G.G.Mc.C. that is inscribed inside the band.

I must admit, I was a little disappointed that my story didn't pan out. But I forgive this ring, I find the symbolic nature of the initials to be intriguing and if they are your initials, well, than all the better.

This ring is crafted in 15 karat gold with a lovely carved square cut bloodstone showing a nice red field. It is currently a size 6.5, but could be sized carefully to preserve the marks. It is marked with the gold karat, the London city mark, the letter code for 1904 and is inscribed "C.G.G.Mc.C May 10, 1905 H.M.F". It is also marked 'J.W.B.' for the maker James Wilson Benson, Ltd.. It weighs 3.8 grams.

Is this an early Magic Circle ring? Perhaps an early symbol carved in stone, a tricky M inside a backward C hanging like a slice of the moon, made up to be given to the founding members at that first London meeting? It could be, the dates do line up, but I kinda doubt it. If you should choose to believe it, perhaps you could imbue it with magic powers of your own!
