Ah, the days before 'disposable' was a word we used every day! A lady's boudoir would be filled with beautifully made glass and silver jars for face creams and powders and lovely perfume bottles including travel-sized bottles like this one.
Made in London in 1883, this gorgeous little bottle is handmade and wonderfully engraved with a pattern of leaves and flowers. It is in excellent condition, no doubt kept safe inside its exquisite hand tooled leather and velvet box. Made by Joseph Charles Mappin, who was one of the original partners of Mappin & Co., which would later become the renowned firm of Mappin & Webb. It is fully hallmarked.
This little bottle has a glass liner and a fitted glass stopper. It still has a bit of the original retailers label attached to the box, but I couldn't quite make it out. The bottle weighs 56 grams outside the box. A beautiful and rare piece of history!
