The Ancient Romans believed that Moonstone was made from the solidified rays of the moon. In actuality it's a variety of Feldspar whose microstructure causes light diffraction, but I like the Roman's explanation of origin much better!
During the Arts & Crafts movement, artists and jewelers used semi-precious materials and gems to the most wondrous effect. This stunning example is completely handmade in sterling silver and set with three iridescent blue moonstones. These cabochon cut stones have a fantastic 'moon' in each one that is brought out when they are worn against the skin. Wonderful Arts and Crafts detailing make this necklace a subtle beauty that promises to go with just about any outfit and garner compliment after compliment.
While it isn't marked at all, this necklace was most likely made in England around 1900-1910. I snatched it up early one Saturday morning at Portobello Road market, it was so lovely I didn't even have to think about it, what I like to a 'no brainer'. The necklace is 20 inches long with a 1.5 inch long drop and a 1.25 inch drop. It weighs 4.9 grams.
