Starting in the mid 19th century in England, craftsman began a backlash against the industrial revolution and the mechanization of production by returning to hand-craftsmanship. This piece is an excellent example of this return.
Wonderfully hand crafted, it showcases simple and lovely Mother of Pearl hanging in a (marked) 9 karat gold frame with simple yet lovely lines. All hand made, including the chain and clasp. Made around 1890-1900, at some point someone added an extra clasp and jump ring so that the chain can be worn at 2 different lengths, the original 19 inches or the shorter 17 inches. Weighs 4.9 grams. A lovely example of Arts and Crafts period jewelry.
