Amazing Antique Shakudo Bracelet, Circa 1890 ~ Rare!

Shakudo was a metal alloy used by craftsmen in Japan for centuries to adorn the swords and armor of the Samurai warriors who ruled there. When the Japanese government outlawed the Samurai in 1876, the craftsmen who had been working these metals for many generations had to look for other outlets for their craft. Many turned to making jewelry, or to re-making the adornments on sword sheaths and armor into wearable items. I'm not sure which category this bracelet falls in, but it is certainly over 100 years old.

If you've browsed my site, you know that I am a fan of Shakudo and I buy it when I can, but I've never until now had a piece so elaborate. Each panel alternates and repeats four times for a total of eight. One panel depicts either two men or an older man and woman, the other depicts a man and woman with a baby in the background. There is some enamel on it here and there and the colors of the Shakudo work are just amazing. Each panel is set in (I think) brass with a built in clasp. The panels are 3/4 of an inch square, the bracelet is 6 1/2 inches long. It has a wonderful weight and a fabulous and unusual look. It weighs 40.7 grams. A great piece of Japanese history and an import piece of Shakudo jewelry. I purchased it in a lovely period box which fits it nicely, but I doubt it's original to the piece.
