Antique French Blackamoor Brooch/Pin, 18k Gold with Emeralds, Rubies & Sapphires

Every time I go buying I look for that one item that will mark the trip in my mind. I remember my trips this way, the time I bought that amazing Art Deco ring or that fantastic Georgian memorial bracelet. This trip will be remembered for this stunning, historical antique Blackamoor (or Moretto) brooch.

This silver and 18 karat gold (tested & marked) brooch is set with the most glorious array of gems. The top of his turban is set with a grass green cabochon emerald of approximately 2.7 carats. The tip is set with twenty point faceted emerald. His turban is set with over a carat of bright blue round faceted Sapphires and over 3 carats of round faceted bright Rubies adorn his turban and robe. His hoop earrings are crafted in 18 karat gold and move freely. All in all he cuts quite the regal figure. The work of a true master he bears the French assay mark of the owl and a makers mark. The owl mark was used on items made in France after 1893. This rare piece was made around 1900-1910. Two gold pin stems hold him firmly in place.

Blackamoor jewelry, sometimes called Moretti is a Victorian era take on old Venetian jewelry which depicted the Moors, usually tribal leaders, often in elaborate turbans such as this. This trend continued well into the Art Deco period and even beyond.

This is the most amazing example of Blackamoor jewelry I have ever had the privilege of owning. They are usually made with onyx or enamel used for the face, I've not seen another one where silver has been used, it's quite striking and truly wonderful. This brooch would make an exceptional addition to any serious collection. Please don't hesitate to contact me for more information about this extraordinary piece.
