French En Tremblant 3 Piece Diamond Flower Brooch, 18k Gold and Silver, Circa 1870 with 1 Carat Mine Cut Diamond Center
"Tea, Mademoiselle?" he asked. "Oui" she replied with a small smile.
She sat across from him sipping her tea from a dainty porcelain cup. In one hand her long slender fingers held the saucer, just so. Between the thumb and first finger of her other hand she held the cup, so thin the edges glowed in the evening light that streamed in through the window behind her. The hand holding the cup fluttered back and forth to her lips in a motion so easy and light it made him think of a butterfly drinking nectar from a delicate flower, so fluid that she hardly moved. In contrast to her seeming stillness, the floral diamond spray on her shoulder was in constant motion. The diamond flower trembled and spun in the last golden rays of the sun. It kept drawing his eye from her face, as it shot small rainbows of light dancing across the walls and ceiling of the drawing room. He thought it the second most beautiful thing he had ever seen, surpassed in loveliness only by it's wearer.
Ah, those crafty French, they always did come up with the best ideas for how to make jewelry even more fabulous. This trembler brooch, often referred to as 'En Tremblant' (French for 'to tremble') is set with a fantastic approximately 1 carat cushion cut diamond at it's center. The rest of the flower is set with 44 sparkly rose cut diamonds and the leaves are set with an additional 60 rose cut diamonds. The brooch comes apart into three pieces via screw fittings in the back, the top leaves are one piece, the center flower is another and the bottom leaves a third. At the time this piece was crafted, these fittings were fairly universal and it would have been easy to purchase a bracelet, tiara, pendant or other frame which would have a screw hole to accommodate your own center flower.
The brooch was made in France around 1870 and is marked with the French eagles head mark, a makers mark and also a serial number. It is 18 karat gold with silver settings. It is 3 inches long, 1.5 inches wide and 1 inch deep to the top of the flower. It weighs 28.5 grams.
If you purchase this brooch, try and wear it as often as possible in candlelight, for this is how it was truly meant to be seen. Low light, fire light, evening light, this is where the magic happens. This fantastic brooch would make a stunning addition to any collection of fine Antique jewelry!
