This antique celluloid & velvet autograph book, which dates to 1908, has such a sweet look to it; it also is oversized. The inside bottom edge has embossed writing on it, which I can’t make out; it’s probably the patent date.
As you can see, it shows a young Dutch boy straddling a wood bench & leaning towards a young Dutch girl. She has a slight smile and is holding two long stemmed flowers, obviously given to her by the young boy. The front is celluloid & the spine and back are green velvet.
Although most of the pages are blank, there are still a few sentiments, some read: “When you get old and ugly, as people often do, remember that you have a friend, that is old and ugly too”. Roy Davidson; “Be kind and gentle to those who are old, for kindness and dearless is better than gold”; “When these days of life have ended, and the path no more you tread, may your name in gold be written in the Autograph of God”; “May their be just clouds enough in your life to make a beautiful sunset”. There are other sentiments as well.
The overall condition is good, with the following to note: the green velvet spine & back shows light wear/loss of nap, mainly around the edges. The spine is very loose, with half of the pages still intact and the back pages loose from the spine. There are very light scratches on the front celluloid, which is normal; nothing deep.
The book measures approx.: 7 ¾” across & 5” tall.
This antique autograph book would look great displayed with your other antiques.
