This is such a striking Victorian celluloid photo album, which is covered in red roses & green leaves, which may be by Catherine Klein, although it is unsigned. The spine and back are done in faded floral velvet. The album sits on a separate stand, which is not original to the photo album, although they were purchased together. Although the bottom velvet drawer of the stand has faded, I know it's not original to the photo album based on the one "hook" on the left side of the metal frame; the hook on the right side is missing. The original photo album would have had a metal bar on the back which hooked onto both hooks. Regardless, they look great together. If desired you could take the one hook off with pliers so the album sits flat on the back.
The antique gold metal side clasp is original and works perfectly.
The overall condition is quite good, with the front celluloid cover in excellent condition. There are no cracks or splits in the celluloid, only a small bit of celluloid missing from the lower right tip (see pic) and lower left tip (smaller than the right). The inside pages have darkened and most all the cabinet card slots have the bottom portions torn or off, which is quite common for an album over 100 years old, which has been used. The nails on the left hand of the stand need to be hammered in a bit since they stick out a bit, but this doesn't affect the sturdiness of the piece. I noticed there is a thin wooden replacement piece underneath the drawer, which you obviously can't see. All in all, this is a wonderful looking antique photo album and stand.
The photo album is 10 ½" long, 8" wide & 1 ½" deep. The stand is approx. 16" tall & 9" wide; both measurements taken from the front.
This is a beautiful Victorian celluloid photo album/stand which displays beautifully; I know the new owner will love it.
