Circa 1815 English Cup & Saucer Kakiemon Design, Porringer Shape
A rare circa 1815 English cup and saucer decorated in the Japanese Kakiemon design with quails and gilt flowers in Imari colors. The shape is a porringer shape, and it is in Michael Berthoud's book A Compendium of British Cups on page 58. The Spode cup in plate 345 is the same shape, although this one is a bit larger than that one. This is 4" wide and 2.5" high. The saucer is a touch over 6" wide. This great cup and saucer is not marked, but I was told by a wonderful customer today that this was made by Coalport, and it is on page 105 of the book "300 Years of Design on Porcelain" by Dr. Chris Girton (thank you Fiona!).
Condition: there is gold gilt rubbing on the top edge of the cup and saucer, there is a tiny nick at the base of the cup under the handle, and some blue paint is missing on the blue quail.
