19th-Century French Stone Bas-Relief of Village Scene

Here is another one of those adorable stone reliefs from central France in the 19th Century. The technique is unique, known as "fountain sculpture", utilizing a mold that is placed in a fountain, and then gradually the calcium in the water is deposited layer by layer to create the thick stone bas-relief. The scene is a wedding, and the well-wishers are all gathered outside the church to greet the happy couple as they exit! The entrance to the church is shown on the right: you can see the baptismal font just inside the open door. First in line is a man with a bagpipe, who will provide the music. Behind him is a couple and the man is holding a bouquet of flowers. To the left a man is sitting, and his dog seems very excited. Behind them we see the whole village in wonderful detail, as the villagers throng the street, eager to take part in the event! Amazing detail. If you look closely, you can even see people on distant balconies getting ready to observe the celebrations. Original frame, including pieces of cork on the back to protect the stone from the nails. DIMENSIONS: Overall length, 6 inches; overall height, 4 & 7/8 inches; thickness, 3/4 inch. CONDITION: Very good. Some minuscule chips and a bit of dirt.
