French 19th-Century Imari Porcelain Platter, Paris Samson

Here is a wonderful find, from the famous Paris ceramics manufacturer Samson, in operation starting in 1845 and finally closing in the mid-20th century. It is a typical heavy French porcelain serving platter richly decorated in brilliant Imari style; and all the colors, including most of the abundant gold, are still as fresh as new. Depicted are a central cache-pot, surrounded by flowers, with two birds perched in branches. The superbly decorated border features alternating flowers and butterflies. On the back the four sides are also adorned with flowers. The color scheme is pure Imari: cobalt blue and orange, with touches of green, and lots of gold. All of the decoration is hand-painted and the enamels are raised. CONDITION: The only signs of wear are to the gold edging, where the platter was carried along the two sides, and to the base rim, where the unglazed porcelain has become impregnated with dirt. The base rim also has a couple of firing flaws. Otherwise, the piece is structurally perfect, with no hairlines or chips, and it still rings like a bell when pinged. DIMENSIONS: Length, 14 & 1/2 inches; width, 10 & 3/8 inches; depth, 1 & 5/8 inches. Weight, about 2 lbs. MARK: Hand-drawn in red on the back, a typical faux-Chinese mark of the type often used by Samson ceramists when creating Oriental-style works.
