I am pleased to present this wonderful antique English Victorian papier mache calling card or visiting card case - dating to the latter half of the 19th Century.
Because of its larger size, 4 1/2" by 3" it is a perfect size for today's business cards and is sure to make an impression. Just pull a card out of this in front of clients and watch your business grow.
The piece is made of papier mache and lacquered black. The back is plain but the front has a wonderful central design of flowers all inlaid with mother of pearl. The borders have a gold painted vine design which is inlaid with mother of pearl and abalone. Stunning!
When you open the hinged lid by pressing the side button it reveals a red silk lining (somewhat faded) and still has the original trim surrounding both the upper and lower lid. A very small section of this veneer trim is missing, but the case still latches well.
The piece is in good antique condition with crazing to the lacquer which is common on a piece this old. It will still function nicely if you wish to use it or make a charming display piece.
