This is a beautiful and rare calling card or visiting card case of English origin. It was made in the mid 19th century.
The case is definitely designed for a woman and has a lovely allover scalloped border. The designs are all floral in nature with the flowers being inlaid mother of pearl and the leaves all done in gold leaf. There is a small amount of red paint outlining and highlighting some of the flowers.
The case has a hinged lid which has an interior border.
The piece measures 3 3/4" by 2 3/4". It will not hold today's standard business card but is still a marvelous vanity or display piece.
The condition is good with some minor crazing to the papier mache. The trim on the interior of the lid has a 1/2" piece missing preventing the lid from snapping shut, however it stays closed securely, and the slight missing trim is not visible from the exterior. Similar pieces on Ruby Lane have sold in excess of $650.00, but I am always willing to pass on a bargain when I can obtain one.
The referenced shipping cost is inclusive of signature delivery confirmation, required by Paypal on all purchases exceeding $250.00.
