Wonderful Ruby Ambrotype of Civil War Soldier Cased in Ninth Plate Leather Case

I just love this ruby ambrotype of a Civil War soldier from the Union army. A ruby ambrotype is a picture done on red glass and was an alternate way of producing these early forms of photography. This would most likely date from 1861 or 1862, since the more popular medium for photography was on metal (tintypes) as opposed to ambrotypes, after 1861.

The soldier stands proudly in his full uniform. All his shiny gold buttons and belt buckle have been tinted gold. A blush was added to his cheeks. He even has on his kepi with gold tinted buttons.

The picture is housed in a ninth plate leather case with an embossed geometric design. The interior has an embossed red velvet pad. It has a single latch closure.

The case when closed measures 2 1/4" by 2 3/4". The ruby ambro has some emulsion loss on the right side of his uniform/arm, which doesn't detract too much from the image, but I have priced it accordingly. The case is in excellent condition, with the leather hinge having been rebound.
