Stunning Nippon Moriage Cracker Jar

This wonderful moriage cracker jar has all the stops and whistles. It was made in 19th century Japan and has a very Victorian look.

The covered piece was used to hold crackers or biscuits and was a common article in the Victorian household.

The piece has lots of heavy moriage (slip-work) and is done in shades of green, pink and purple. The beautiful purple flowers are breathtaking.

The entire jar including the lid measures about 5" in height. Across it measures about 8" handle to handle.

This is unsigned, as are most of these early pieces which precede enforcement of the McKinley Tariff Act which required labeling of imported goods.

It is in wonderful condition with perhaps a small piece of slip-work missing here and there around the bottom. Hard for me to tell.
