I am not a doll collector, but I could just see this adorable item placed next to one of those fabulous French fashion dolls. It is made of tortoise shell and dates to the mid 19th Century.
It is most likely French in origin, and measures 2 5/8" by 2 2/8". The front is inlaid in gold metal, probably brass and there are tiny circles of abalone inlaid creating a circular design. There is brass inlay surrounding the central circle motif. The top closes with a tiny brass latch.
The piece opens to reveal a blue velvet lining and a compartment to hold coins, with a latch that is still working.
The purse is in fair antique condition. The tortoise shell is all intact with no cracks. The top latch and interior latch work. There is some missing inlay from the scroll work on the sides of the central brass circle. The interior velvet has not faded but could use some re-gluing.
All in all a wonderful antique for your doll or yourself. Enjoy!
