This lovely yard long print is by the well-known German watercolorist, Catherina Klein. Klein was born in Eylau, Prussia (Germany) in 1861, and died in Berlin, Germany in 1929. Klein was active during the latter half of the 1800's into the early 1900's, painting alongside other prominent artists such as Paul de Longpre, Grace Barton Allen. She worked for Raphael Tuck, among other well known lithographers. Not much is known about Klein, as she was most likely a production artist, and we are most familiar with her postcards and small prints. Klein occasionally painted yardlong studies and this unsigned piece is beautiful.
This ensemble of fresh cabbage roses has pastel hues, and the artwork execution is indeed superb. There are dewdrops on the roses. The roses are heavily petaled, portrayed as a casual study, giving the impression they were just harvested. FYI, this piece is by Catherine Klein, as the far left two roses were published as a separate print, and that print has her signature.
This yardlong is a chromolithograph. It is housed in the original frame and still has the old hand-rolled bubbled glass. At each corner is a burnished brass embellishment with a French ribbon and flowers. The backing paper is intact. Overall size is aprox 10.5 x 38.5 inches. (Please disregard any lighter fading or lines in the photos, they are just glass reflection/glare.) Yardlongs are fabulous art focal points, whether they be over a couch, kitchen nook, doorways, beds, or combined with other rose prints for an outstanding visual display.
The print is in VG++ condition with minimal wear. The frame is also in VG condition, repainted and touched up at some times in its old life.
