1859 Certificate Appointment of Fireman ENGINE CO No. 7 SYRACUSE New York
The raised corporate seal that stamps "CITY OF SYRACUSE JAN 3RD 1848" is clear and crisp. The actual wording of this document is as follows: "That on the first day of August 1858 Robert Hewett was appointed one of the firemen, of the CITY OF SYRACUSE, attached to Engine Company No. 7 according to a resolution of the Common Council, passed Nov 22nd 1858. To have and to hold the said office subject to the Ordinances, and during the pleasure of the Common Council and to be entitled to the privileges and exemptions from Military and Jury service as by law entitled. In witness hereto set my hand, and affixed the Corporate Seal of said city this 21st day of February 1859. J. S. Gillespie Clerk." The reverse side has the wording "Robert Hewitt Fireman of the City of Syracuse, attached to Company, No. 7 D Harry Foreman. Syracuse, Feb. 21 1859. E S Matthews City Clerk named Person is entitled to a certificate of discharge Dec 28th (indecipherable). Filed Dec 28, 1859."
It measures 9 5/8" by 7 1/2" and was folded in thirds. It is in really great condition, with the exception of a stain that can be seen, light staining at the creases and two of the corners bent (tiny). It has been preserved in a plastic sleeve.
