If you enjoyed watching the Medieval series "The Pillars of the Earth," you will remember the lovely costumes and jewelry worn by its heroine, the beautiful and resourceful Lady Aliena. I've adapted these Medieval reproduction earrings from styles worn in her time, the early 12th century. Many thanks to my Lady Rosamarina, who suggested this new line.
The bronze chandeliers are significant to Aliena's story: they are the classic Rose Windows of stained glass, introduced into the Gothic cathedrals of France and England in the 1140s. Aliena's great love Jack Jackson was one of the builders of these revolutionary cathedrals, and would have seen the very first one in the Cathedral of St. Denis in Paris, where he is shown working in the film under the direction of the great Abbot and historian, Suger.
I've accented the Rose Windows with red bamboo coral, a gem that was very significant to women of Aliena's time. This is natural bamboo coral that has been permanently dyed a bright red shade. Red coral was believed by the Medievals to help regulate women's cycles and promote good health because of its vibrant blood-red color. I use bamboo coral because it is relatively plentiful, looks beautiful when permanently dyed, and does not deplete the world's endangered supply of reef corals.
All are worked on bronze wire and hang from 14kt. gold-filled French wires, and include rubber stoppers for security. They measure 1 & 7/8" total. They are remarkably lightweight despite their dramatic appearance.
Feel like a Medieval heroine in these earrings. They would retail in a good historical reproduction jewelry catalog for about $90, but they would not be handcrafted artisan earrings like these.
The last scan is the lovely Hayley Atwood as Lady Aliena, wearing one of her long chandelier earrings. Given the scarcity of precious metals in 12th century Europe, even a noble lady's jewelry would have been made of brass, glass, wood and easily obtainable materials.
All metals used are 14kt. gold-filled (earwires), and bronze (cathedral windows and pins).
