For the many customers who have written me to ask if I watched the marvelous series "The Tudors": of course! The costumes and jewelry alone made the series a must-see for anyone who loves Renaissance history. These new earrings are a modern adaptation of the pearl earrings that were very popular during that time.

Pearls have always been loved, but during the Renaissance they were an integral part of any piece of jewelry. Pearl earrings were worn not only for their beauty but to display the wealth and status of the lady. This simple drop style of pearl earrings is timelessly romantic and feminine: a precious metal hoop with a single pearl drop.

The 13mm. hoops are 14kt. gold-filled, with a beautiful textured satin finish, and latch in the back for easy closing. The cultured freshwater pearl drops measure about 10mm. They are worked on 24kt. sterling vermeil pins, with Florentine-style gold-plated filigree beadcaps on the bottom, and smaller gold-plated filigree beadcaps on the top. The earrings measure a total of 1 & 1/8" long.

During the Medieval and Renaissance times, gold was so expensive that it was reserved for royalty and the Church. Wealthy women wore vermeil, which is silver overlaid with gold, and known then as 'silver-gilt.' Using it in my Medieval reproductions makes them even more authentic.

These are very similar to pearl earrings seen on the recent series "The Borgias". English and French Renaissance 16th century styles were profoundly influenced by the earlier 15th century Italian styles in all things, particularly jewelry. The last scan is Cate Blanchett as Queen Elizabeth I, greatest of all the Tudor monarchs.

All metals are 14kt. gold-fill and 24kt. sterling vermeil, except the Florentine-style beadcaps and fluted round beads, which are gold-plate, and all cultured freshwater pearls are genuine.

The retail value of these earrings in a good historical reproduction jewelry catalogue would be approximately $95.

You don't need a full Renaissance costume to feel like a romantic heroine--a simple longish dress, and these delightful earrings will make you feel like a Lady of the Tudor court herself!
