MELUSINE Earrings Medieval Water Enchantress Moonstone Amethyst Iolite Kyanite Aquamarine Silver

In Medieval legends and romances, Melusine was a magical water goddess, often seen as a mermaid. A Medieval French legend places her as an ancestress of the Plantagenet dynasty of England (themselves rumored to contain an enchantress or two! Look up (or email me) the legend of the founding of the famous Order of the Garter.). Her name is derived from "Lucina" an ancient name for the Moon Goddess. This is the latest in my popular 'Melusine' Medieval series.

This is a one of a kind pair of earrings, featuring colors and gems all associated with the element of Water. The style is modern, a cascade of glittering soft water-colored crystals, but I think the famously feminine and elegant Melusine would have loved these. The gemstones are cobalt-blue cubic zirconia, rainbow moonstone, amethyst, aquamarine, cultured freshwater pearl, kyanite and iolite.

From the bottom, they feature 10mm. faceted briolettes of wire-wrapped cobalt blue glittering cubic zirconia. Above them are cascades of water-colored gems, all 4-5mm. in size: rainbow moonstone, amethyst, kyanite, iolite, aquamarine and peach-color cultured freshwater pearls, accented with tiny sterling beads for extra sparkle, like sunlight glittering on water.

All are worked on sterling silver rolo chain with sterling silver-filled wire. They hang from sterling silver filigree posts. Filigree was very popular in Medieval jewelry, having been brought back from the East by knights returning from the Crusades. Melusine would have certainly worn filigree jewelry. They measure a hairline less than 1.75" long.

Medieval knights often wore this motto for their chosen ladies: "Vous et neul autre." (you and no other). Melusine's lord, Raymond of Poitou (who was said to have adored her) might well have worn this motto for her. Only you will wear these, my Lady: you and no other. The last scan is an illustration from the 15th century French "Roman de Melusine." Her husband Raymond of Poitou is about to discover that Melusine is no ordinary Medieval lady.

All metals used are sterling silver and sterling silver-filled. The gemstones are all genuine; the cubic zirconia are lab-created.

The retail value of these earrings in a good historical jewelry catalogue would be approximately $120.
