If you enjoyed watching the Medieval series "The Pillars of the Earth," you will remember the lovely costumes and jewelry worn by its heroine, the beautiful and resourceful Lady Aliena. I've adapted these Medieval reproduction earrings from styles worn in her time, the early 12th century. Many thanks to my Lady Rosamarina, who suggested this new line.
These are an openwork style, reminiscent of the filigree that was so popular in Aliena's time. Knights returning to Europe from the first Crusades brought back filigree jewelry for their ladies from the Eastern bazaars. These earrings would have been highly popular and sought after during this time.
I've accented the bronze tone of the chandeliers with 14mm. briolettes of very fine quality honey chalcedony. This is a luscious shade that is far more beautiful in person, looking like there is amber light trapped inside the briolettes. They are wrapped on 14kt. gold-filled wire. The smaller beads on the sides are 6mm. finely faceted Czech art glass in a complementing amber-topaz color. These are "Cathedral" beads, meaning they are bevelled at the edges, and I used them because building cathedrals is the main theme of Pillars of the Earth. They hang from 24kt. sterling vermeil French wires. They measure a total of 2 and 5/8" long total, and 2 & 1/8" without the wires.
Feel like a Medieval heroine in these very authentic-looking Medieval chandelier earrings. They would retail in a good historical reproduction jewelry catalog for about $85, but they would not be handcrafted artisan earrings like these.
The last scan is the lovely Hayley Atwood as Lady Aliena, wearing one of her long chandelier earrings. Given the scarcity of precious metals in 12th century Europe, even a noble lady's jewelry would have been made of brass, bronze, glass, wood and easily obtainable materials.
All metals used are 24kt. sterling vermeil (earwires), 14kt. gold-filled (wrapping wire), bronze (jewelry pins), and bronze finish over pewter (chandeliers). The honey chalcedony is natural and genuine.
