I spent the summer of 1971 as a student at the Aegina Arts Centre in Greece. During that magical summer, my teachers included Canadian poet/songwriter Leonard Cohen, South African poet Sinclair Bailes and the visionary 20th century genius Buckminster Fuller. The deep distinctive blue colors of the sky, sea and homes on the Greek islands I explored are still as vivid in my mind today. I've crafted these new earrings to remember that unforgettable summer. And yes, I did think I had died and gone to Heaven........
The chandeliers are silverplate over brass, and feature the distinctive curled acanthus leaves of Corinthian columns of ancient Greek temples. The lovely art glass made in the Czech Republic is the exact color of the skies, an intense turquoise-blue that is unique to this part of the world. The 8 and 6mm. faceted rondelles have a sand-washed pattern throughout. All are worked on sterling silver filled wires, with silverplate beadcaps, and sterling silver fine cable chain for a graceful swaying curve at the bottom.
The earrings hang from sterling silver-filled leverback wires. They measure 2 & 5/8" total and 2 & 1/8" without the wires. They are lightweight.
The last scan is the ancient Temple of Aphaia that sits atop the mountainous island of Aegina. I used to climb up every few days just for the magnificent view of the entire Saronic gulf, its other islands, and the mainland.
The metals are sterling silver-filled, and silverplate over brass.
