Russian Handpainted Lacquer Paper Mache Plate Wood Carvers
We offer an old Russian paper mache or wood plate handpainted depicting wood carvers. It's about 8 5/8 inches in diameter. We purchased this and several of the boxes from a couple that are paring down their collections. They were in the first wave of travelers that went to Russia after the wall came down. The lady told me what area the plate came from, but I forgot and I didn't write it down. It is signed by the artist lower right. As far as I can tell it is spelled Tykaeba or Tykabba. There is no damage.
The painting on this plate is enchanting. I love the rooster in the front. The artist took great pains to show the detail in the carving of the large pieces the mean are carving. This will be a wonderful addition to any collection of Russian folk art.
