Silk Theatre Program circa 1845

This is a fascinating piece of theatrical history. In the nineteenth century, theater programs printed on silk were used as souvenirs of special performances, events or attractions.

Created for a special occasion November 7, 1845 at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham, this performance was under the patronage of the Mayor of Nottingham. The feature was a new comedy "Time Works Wonders!", and there is a listing of the myriad other entertainments for the evening, including a "Bal Poudre", which would appear to be inspired by the court balls of the 18th century with powdered wigs, etc. In any event, all the detailed information makes for fascinating reading, and a night out at this theatre was really a night out! (For those of you old enough to remember the Beatles Sgt. Pepper phase, this is reminiscent of "For the Benefit of Mr. Kite" - surely they took those lyrics from a similar item).

Printed in red on what was probably originally white silk, now a grey color. Fringe on all four sides.

I received this framed as you see it, and since I suspect the framing was done at least 20 years ago, I would suggest re-doing this frame package with some of the new, protective glass and conservation quality materials (and even so, not keeping it displayed where it will be subject to light exposure).

Size: overall framed size: 20.5" high, 14.75" wide.

Condition: Excellent. Some overall discoloration, and a few spots. A few stray pieces of something appear to have strayed into the frame (lint? Paper?). I have not had the backing paper off.

Note that I try to be conservative about condition descriptions, carefully noting any flaws. Of course, with antique items, there will be some signs of usage, and/or manufacturing defects. But overall, my customers have always been pleasantly surprised upon receiving their items, and of course, I would expect a return if I happen to miss anything.
