Fantastic Pair of Large Mirror Image Satsuma Samurai 15" Vases from the Meiji Period 1868 to 1912
Since the 1600s, Satsuma pottery has been produced in the Satsuma Province in Japan. Satsuma pottery pieces decorated with holy people, figures, warriors and Japanese legends -- first were introduced in the mid-1800s. We believe these Samurai, Satsuma vases date from 1868 to 1912. These two wonderful old pieces are perfect mirror images, which this signifies that they are a mated pair. They have been hand painted with moriage details, depicting Samurai Warriors in battle dress on one side and a large gold and green flower on the other side. A large, gold centered, magenta colored flower accented and outlined with gold moriage decorates the neck on the front sides. Under the samurai scene a sea foam green and gold flower has been decorated with white moriage. The vases have very ornate detail design of the samurai scene. Decorative rings with 'Slip' ties are on each side of the vases. Excellent condition for it's age (about 120 years old), with some slight separation on the slip ties. See use enlarging feature to view photos for more of the beautiful scenes and more condition details. (A possible clue to it's older age is that there are no marks - in the 1800's there was a Nippon/Japanese law not to allow export of Japanese Artifacts, so there was no need for marks to be put on items made at that time.) On the bottom is written Jerry's Japanese Jardinière, possibly markings for inheritance purposes. IT IS RARE TO FIND VINTAGE AND ANTIQUE POTTERY IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IF PRESENT IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.
