Gorgeous Majolica Tea Pot ~ Cauliflower Motif ~ Griffen, Smith, Hill Etruscan prior to 1879

What a wonderful example of Majolica by the American potter Griffen, Smith, Hill who designed under the trade name of "Etruscan". American potters' efforts to compete with the English often led them to mimic the best designs from across the sea, like the well-established Wedgwood cauliflower line. This well received cauliflower line was published in the 1884 Griffen, Smith & Co's 1884 catalog. This piece has a wonderful green variegated leaves on the lower portion of the pot, handle and spout. Raised relief brings out in great detail the veins of the leaves which are in a deeper green color. A rose pink color accents the upper portion of the green leaves giving it a wonderful contrast. The upper part of the pot and the lid depict the head of the cauliflower in a soft cream color. Each bunch of clusters making up the head of the cauliflower has deep detail and a wonderful soft yellow glaze applied. The lid has a hole in it to allow the steam to escape. The inner rim of the tea pot lid appears to be remade, the outer part is slightly a lighter color than the cream color on the body but it still looks good. This tea pot can is illustrated in the book "Majolica American & European Wares" by Jeffrey B. Snyder & Leslie Bockol. IT IS RARE TO FIND MAJOLICA IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IF PRESENT IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.
