What a wonderful example of Majolica by the American potter Griffen, Smith, Hill who designed under the trade name of "Etruscan". American potters' efforts to compete with the English often led them to mimic the best designs from across the sea. The colors on this wonderful piece are still nice and bright on wonderful raised relief flowers and leaves. Each flower petal is well defined with hint of pinkish mauve over white on the large flowers and a nice butter yellow on smaller flowers. Deep blue green leaves are intermingled throughout the flowers giving the piece a nice contrast. The handles are designed as stems going along with the floral theme. Due to rough places on this piece It appears that the glaze was not very thick when applied at the factory but it definitely does not take away from it's beauty. .There is a small chip and a hairline crack on the rim of this piece otherwise it is in perfect condition. Please see pictures. IT IS RARE TO FIND VINTAGE AND ANTIQUE IRONSTONE OR EARTHENWARE IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE
Backstamp: Etruscan surrounding GHS initials
Measures: 12 ½" L x 10" W
