This is a signed piece of Pickard that was decorated by the artist, 'E. Challinor'. Edward Challinor was one of the most notable of Pickard artist. Challinor was a descendant from a family of Staffordshire potters. He served as an apprentice with the Royal Doulton Potteries in Burslem. He also studied at the Newcastle School of Arts in Staffordshire which was an auxiliary of the South Kensington School of Art in London. In 1903 he came to America to seek employment. Challinor found work in Chicago working for Pickard Studio. Challinor, because of his considerable skills and prolific output tends to overshadow other Pickard artists. He has painted beautiful pink flowers with green and gray leaves on long wispy stems and placed them on the rim of the plate. The rim has a texture look and feel to it like Pickard’s pieces that are done in all over gold. Using a soft white background this almost gives a vellum look to it, which is one of Challinor’s specialties. He has completed this masterpiece with a gold rim and an inner gold band around the well. There are no chips, hairlines or cracks; manufacturing anomalies do exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc.
