Gorgeous Limoges Porcelain Game Plate Hand Painted with Water Fowl By Artist "MAX" ~ Elite Limoges France 1900
The renown French Artist Max is very will know for his game plate masterpieces and this is definitely one of them. Others by this artist can be seen in the reference book by Mary Gaston's 'Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain', 3rd Edition. Max has chosen a blank with a slightly scalloped rim. The main subject is a beautiful water fowl with a blue and purple top knot and purple and white wings. He has placed the duck just barely in the water and has painted bushes and grasses along the green bank. For the background he has painted the water a blue purple color with trees in the background in a deeper shadowy shade. The sky is a wonderful mixture of blues, yellows, pinks and purples tying wonderfully with the coloring on the duck. There are no hairlines or cracks; manufacturing anomalies do exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc.
