Exquisite ~ Porcelain Plate by the Pickard Studio Hand Painted with Nasturtiums by Florence James ~ 1905-1910

This little plate had to wait a few years for the very talented artist to put her masterpiece on it. Ms. James has painted a wonderful rendition of brightly colored nasturtiums of yellow, orange and a deep burnt orange. She has placed beautiful green leaves and vines around the flora. The background is of soft pastels of pink green, blue and yellow. The scalloped edge of this elegant little plate has been trimmed in gold and has gold accents in three places balancing it out expertly. Ms James has signed the front of this gem! There are no hairlines or cracks; manufacturing anomalies do exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc. Florence James was the most prolific among the women at Pickard studios. In 1901, at age 16, she had already set up her own china decorating studio in Milwaukee. In early 1905 she moved to Chicago and became one of studio's youngest artists, male or female. Her work can be seen in "Collector's Encyclopedia of Pickard China," by Alan B. Reed.
