Ms. James has painted a wonderful rendition of poppies on this gorgeous plate. She has painted each poppy a beautiful white with soft hues of pink accenting the petals. The center of the white poppy is green with a butter yellow around it. She has added green and brown leaves and wispy stems. Golden stems of wheat have been painted opposite of the flowers balancing it out nicely. Around the upper portion of the flowers she has used a sky blue background and the underside she has just a hint of pink in background. These colors blend into a creamy white color to finish out the background colors. She has completed this masterpiece with a golden scalloped rim. The artist `Florence M. James' has signed the front of this piece of artwork. She is listed in the "Collector's Encyclopedia of Pickard China," by Alan B. Reed and is a well know china painter. Florence James was the most prolific among the women at Pickard studios. In 1901, at age 16, she had already set up her own china decorating studio in Milwaukee. In early 1905 she moved to Chicago and became one of studio's youngest artists, male or female. There are no hairlines or cracks; manufacturing anomalies do exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc.
Please see our other poppy plates by Ms. James PLT320 & PLT504 & PLT622. These three would look beautiful together as a grouping.
