Illuminating 12 1/4" French Faience / Majolica Charger with Red Roses ~ KELLER & GUERIN - ERNEST BUSSIERE (Nancy, France) - ca. 1890s - 1930s

The Red Rose not only carries more meaning than many other color roses, it is also one of the most universal of all symbols. They have appeared throughout history and across many cultures as political and religious symbols. It is as the symbol for love that the red rose is most commonly recognized. They have added white and yellow on the roses giving it true depth and a very realistic look. Keller & Guerin have depicted the true beauty of these wonderful red roses by making it the whole focal point of this plate. They have used soft green, grays and blues to form the petals giving each one a three dimensional look. They have added leaves of greens, grays and blues around this huge blossom. The rose has been surrounded by a background of deep grays, blues and greens that soften as it recedes away for the flower. This piece is drilled on the plate footing for hanging. There are no hairlines or cracks; manufacturing anomalies do exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc.
