Nice Dark Teal Transferware Plate ~ American Scenes: Washington Home Mt. Vernon~ Buffalo Pottery Buffalo NY 1903-1910

This is a fantastic dark blue teal transfer plate in perfect condition with a view of Washington’s home in Mt. Vernon. It has a beautiful rim that is decorated with bouquets of flowers and a decorative lattice work pattern. The deep teal design is on a white background giving it a nice rich look. This plate is from the historical American Scenes series by the Buffalo Pottery. This antique plate is just over 100 years old and produced between 1903 and 1910 as part of a patriotic series by the Buffalo Pottery located in Buffalo New York. The pottery was started in 1901 by the Larkin Soap Company and William Rhea. Larkin soap offered premiums starting in the 1890s. Elbert Hubbard was responsible for originating the premium concept for Larkin. Customers who purchased Larkin products received premium rewards that were then able to be redeemed for gifts and other items. Rhea was hired to established the Buffalo Pottery in 1901 in order to produce pottery for certain items for Larkin premiums. The pottery was successful in its own right and went on to produce many different lines of wares in addition to special Larkin premium items. IT IS RARE TO FIND ANTIQUE EARTHENWARE IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.

The Buffalo Pottery produced other plates in this American patriotic series that included other historical sites, buildings and natural wonders. A few examples from this series include Independence Hall (Philadelphia), Niagara Falls, Mount Vernon, the US Capitol, etc. The plates were produced between 1903 and 1910 based on the dates shown in some examples and the style of the mark used. The mark on this plate has an American eagle clutching an American flag in its talons and holding a banner in its beak that has ‘BUFFALO POTTERY UNDERGLAZE WARRANTED’ spaced along the flowing banner. The pottery changed its products from common ironstone to vitrified china in 1916 and also started using a mark with ‘Buffalo China’ instead of Buffalo pottery. The plate offered here is the older ware produced by the Buffalo pottery between 1916.
