This breathtaking black plate is made of black lacquer covered wood and inlaid with mother of pearl or Abalone shell. The inlay design in the middle of the plate has beautiful birds, a tree with branches, leaves and flowers. On the inlay pieces groves have been carved and painted with black to enhance this wonderful design. This piece has a few rim chips; please see pictures.
Lacquer (urushi) is a living substance - sap - carefully collected from Urushi trees (a type of Sumac, which is related to poison oak and ivy). It has been used for over six thousand years in Japan to coat all types of things, from wood to baskets to leather to pottery. Lacquer-coated pots and wooden items have been found in Japanese Neolithic sites carbon dated to about 4500 B.C. This is an example of that fine tradition of its use in modern day items - a very unique and elaborate piece with dynamic purpose.
