The Amalfi Coast is the region of Italy's coastline located just south of Naples and one of the most scenic coastal areas of Italy. In this painting Briganti captured the beauty of this scenic place with oil on canvas. The colors he used are dark and romantic. They are very similar to other works that he has created. The scene depicts a building built into the hillside along the Amalfi Coast. Large pillars appear to be holding up a ceiling over a walkway. A woman carried a basket is painted walking along the path. Vines and flowers are between the pillars on one side. Beautiful foliage is growing on the hillside. The artist definitely gives you a wonderful view and lets your imagination take you to this magnification place. The canvas of this piece is very old. It has one small quarter inch tear and several small pin holes that can be seen when held up to the light. On the wall it looks absolutely beautiful!
Briganti was active in New Bedford, Massachusetts between 1893 and 1897, Nicholas Briganti painted luminous landscapes of bucolic scenes as well as figure and human activity. Briganti exhibited at the New Bedford Art Club and his work is in the New Bedford Free Public Library. He taught drawing at the New Bedford Business University. His name is often confused with Nicholas Briganti (1895-1989) of California, modernist, abstract painter but their artwork is totally different.
