Wonderful Antique German Die Cut, 20'' x 17'' Framed, Image of Baby Jesus in Ornate Frame. 1890's -1900's.
This beautiful die cut is of Baby Jesus sitting on a cloth covered hay bale. A beautiful golden halo adorns his head. He is holding up two fingers which represent the two natures of Christ - divine and human. During early church history, there were two heresies that arose. One heresy claiming that Jesus was fully divine masquerading as a human, and the other claiming that He was fully human and not really divine. Both heresies were fought by the Church and an official ruling was made that stated that Jesus was both human and divine. This teaching has been carried forth in art by Jesus holding up two fingers to symbolize his two natures. The cutout is applied to a wonderful golden brown background. The frame has ornate designs of plaster on the edge giving it a wonderful rich look. There is also glass in the frame protecting this wonderful piece of art. The frame has a few pieces of plaster missing otherwise in great condition.
