Unbelievable Floral Etched European Water Pitcher and Set of Four Tumblers ~ Hand Blown ~ Melon Shape ~ 1800’s

This set is truly awesome and ONE OF A KIND!!!! The water pitcher has a unique bulbous melon shape body with a straight neck and small spout. The lobes of the base have a blown out effect. The hand blown handle has been attached to the neck and the body of this piece. Between the wedges in the body gold has been applied. There are also gold bands on the neck and rim of the pitcher. The body of the pitcher has been etched with delicate aster looking flowers on wispy stems. A main motif on the front has a flower urn overflowing with foliage and flowers. Under the urn are other floral designs. An etched fleur de lis border is also on the neck of the pitcher and around the top of the glasses. Cooling marks (string-like inclusions in glass caused as the hot glass cools) often erroneously called "straw marks" can be seen on the neck. The rim of this pitcher is not real smooth but not chipped either; it appears that it just wasn't ground down. On the bottom is a rough pontil, caused by the removal of the item from the glass blowing rod. The tumblers have the same etched small floral design covering the outside. You can see a few included bubbles in the glass. The only damage I can see is a small smoothed chip on one tumbler. There are no cracks on this set. Please see pictures for condition.

A fine example of quality workmanship from a master glass shop.

Antique and vintage pitchers were more table decoration than just liquid containers. They were a symbol of status once they became commercially exchanged. Landowners who were competitors to one another, usually held high-level parties to display their collection of pitchers. The tradition continues except the protagonist is the antique item collector in recent times. Antique glass pitchers are considered highly difficult to manufacture in earlier days as the buildings used to catch fire during the production process. Hence, there are not many items available in the market. This makes them even more valuable and alluring to collectors. Many big auction houses have exclusive shows for vintage glass pitchers and other dinnerware. Future collectors will also naturally find such decorative pitchers irresistible. Glass pitchers seldom lose their brilliance and charm as gift items and vintage glass make for valuable and precious gifts. Since they are available in all shapes, sizes and colors, they suit the preferences of a wide variation of collectors irrespective of their place of origin, age or occupation.

Any glass water pitcher must be used with caution. A sharp rap on a hard surface, like the sink edge when the pitcher is being cleaned, can cause the glass to shatter. Special care must be taken if you are using hot water and pouring it in the glass pitcher. Warm glass water pitchers with tap water first, bringing the pitcher's temperature up to very warm before adding really hot or boiling water to the pitcher. It is best to place the pitcher in the sink before pouring in the hot water, in case the glass shatters anyway. With the pitcher in the sink and your others well away, the boiling water will run down the drain and only the pitcher will be damaged. Hot water should not be used when cleaning antique glass, nor be put in it to be served. Using an antique glass water pitcher only requires a little more care, and these beautiful objects can certainly be used if you wish. Just handle carefully, and move slowly to prevent accidents.
