UNBELIEVABLE Brown English Glaze Majolica Pitcher Decorated with Goddess Appliqués. ~ Josiah Wedgwood 1890's
The deep brown glaze on this piece shimmers so beautifully when the light hits it, it truly makes you stop and admire it. The decoration of beautiful golden Greek like Goddesses, one carrying flowers or fruit and one holding a sickle have been applied to the pitcher on each side. Golden fern like decoration are in-between woman giving a well balanced decoration to this piece. Flowered shape appliqués have been applied under the rim of the pitcher giving it an extra touch. The handles and the inside of the pitcher are in the same golden yellow glaze. The appliqués have several cracks running through them but are still all in one piece and there is an old repair under the spout where the glaze has come off. This spot is not noticeable unless you are close up to the piece. There are no hairlines or cracks; manufacturing anomalies do exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc.
