Wonderful ROSSO ANTICO ( Redware / Terra Cotta ) Pitcher ~ Cambridge Ale Shape ~Trinity College in the University of Cambridge, England Shield by WEDGWOOD, England Dec 1869

What a gorgeous piece of history this jug holds. Made over 160 years ago I'm sure it has held a lot of ale in its time! It gets its name from the fact that these jugs were made for the Colleges of the famous University city of Cambridge and sometimes they have the coat of arms for the college on them. This pitcher has the coat of arms for the Trinity College of the Universities of Cambridge. The shield is made up of an argent, a chevron between three roses gules barbed and seeded proper and on a chief gules a lion passant gardant between two closed books. The history of Trinity goes back to the reign of Henry VIII and most of its major buildings date from the 16th and 17th centuries. The beauty and size of Trinity's courts attract visitors from all over the world, but the College is also a thriving, modern community. Trinity College was founded by Henry VIII in 1546. There are a few scuffs on the bulbous body and an surface stress crack the inner rim, but is a factory imperfection from 1869. As with all old pottery, even Wedgwood; manufacturing anomalies may exist.

Backstamp: Impressed WEDGWOOD mark & DX ? third letter is illegible the DX date it to Dec 1869
