(2) Remarkable 13 1/2” German Plaques ~Earthenware Terre Cotta ~ J. Uffrecht Germany 1887-1895

These 2 plaques are very unique looking and at first glance you would think they were French. The subjects are two gentlemen (?) dressed in elaborate clothing of the time period, possibly royalty? They have been created from red earthenware and have a beautiful olive green background with golden highlights showing through on the raised relief images. The rim has beautiful raised designs of shields, helmets, scrolls and mythical creatures. They are drilled on the back for hanging. There are no chips or cracks on either plaque. These were made by a German manufacturer J. Uffrecht between 1887-1895. This company was a manufacturer of household earthenware pieces from 1855 until 1924 (when it merged with C. & E. Carstens, to become Carstens-Uffrecht). Although molded siderolith pieces such as these are sometimes confused with majolica, siderolith is an earthenware composed of (usually terre cotta) colored clay with an enameled (or sometimes varnished) coating -- rather than the light colored clays and tin-oxide glazes that are typical of continental majolica.
