This piece is masterfully done! It has a wonderful piece of cinnabar hand carved with peony flowers. The cinnabar has been set in a 10K gold plated, filigreed edged clasp. We have tested the gold and it does test out to 10K but there is some corrosion due to the wearing of the plate. The clasp has a spring action on the tab portion. It does have some gold ware on the filigree but we fell it is in excellent condition.
The Chinese name for the peony, which is the traditional flower symbol of china, is sho yu. This means "most beautiful" as this wonderful piece truly is. The most popularly known use of cinnabar is in Chinese carved lacquer ware, a technique that apparently originated in the Song Dynasty. Please see pictures for condition.
