This is a beautiful little box in a brick red lacquer. The lid fits completely over the base. Beautiful silver butterflies have been hand painted flying upward to gold and red foliage. The inside and bottom of the box has black lacquer. The inside has some damage and there are a few nicks on the outside edges. Please see pictures for condition. Lacquer (urushi) is a living substance - sap - carefully collected from Urushi trees (a type of Sumac, which is related to poison oak and ivy). It has been used for over six thousand years in Japan to coat all types of things, from wood to baskets to leather to pottery. Lacquer-coated pots and wooden items have been found in Japanese Neolithic sites carbon dated to about 4500 B.C. This is an example of that fine tradition of its use in modern day items - a very unique and elaborate piece with dynamic purpose.
