CHESAPEAKE POTTERY: Of Baltimore, Maryland, was started in 1881 by D. F. Haynes & Co., and it has achieved a high reputation for the variety of excellent bodies and glazes it has produced, and still greater distinction by the beauty and originality of its designs, both in form and decoration. The most original and perhaps the most refined and beautiful was the so-called Severn ware, first made in 1885. It marked "an era in the history of American ceramics." It was a fine body of a subtle grayish-olive tint. Parian ware was also produced in the same year. In 1886, the manufacture of fine semi-porcelain in a great variety of articles, both useful and ornamental, was commenced.
