Rare 181 Year Old English Earthenware Butter Pat ~ Florentine China ~ Light Blue with Scene ~ "Manilla" Pattern ~ Samuel Alcock Staffordshire UK 1828-1859
Well you won’t see this one very often!!! The pattern name probably comes from the city in the Philippines of the same name. Yet, as Asian as the name is, one finds very few, if any, Asian elements in this scene. The foreground figures are in Western dress, the trees look to be like those found in Europe, and the buildings are all of Gothic architecture. A mother, father, and child holding a parasol are seen at the foot of a shrine and some steps leading up the bank towards the large Gothic building in the center. A river divides the landscape which quickly fades away into a foggy view of distant buildings. The border of wavy concentric lines is accented with a pattern of scrolls. This little gem does have a hairline crack but the colors and transfer is still phenomenal!
Backstamp: Beehive with a Manilla above and the trade name “FLORENTINE CHINA” on a ribbon beneath
Measures: 4 ½” W x 1 ½” H
