This is an absolutely remarkable show-piece done in the famous "Renaissance Fond Bleu" of the Gien Faienceries. The chimera and foliage, in all the splendor and symmetry of Italian Renaissance motifs blossom on this wonderful old piece. During the Renaissance, shapes became increasingly complex and style increasingly elaborate. These were ordered by the princely families as this piece possibly could have been! This remarkable vase has been hand painted with an exquisite level of detail and the glaze still has a very high gloss to it after all these years. The handles of this piece is a set of two green, black spotted snakes banded together by golden rope. After the band their bodies curl upward forming the great handles. The two heads split as they come down and are attached to opposite sides of the vase facing away from each other. The snake heads are decorated with a beaded necklace! Their bodies curl around and attach to the shelf under the mouth of the vase and proceeded down the body splitting and curling in opposite directions on the sides. The main background color of the vase is a deep, rich cobalt blue. The shelf portion of the vase is decorated with serpent heads on one side and a shield on the other side. Colorful flowers are around the motifs. The designs are painted in beautiful golds, blues, greens, and rust colors. The main motif on the bulbous portion of the vase has three small naked figures inside of a heart shape with two large, winged, human like, creatures holding a flaming torch fighting against serpents. The other side has two human like creatures holding a vase and two serpents attacking. Beautiful bold and bright flora and scrolls are placed all around the two main motifs. The large body of the vase narrows at the bottom and then flares out to form the base of this magnificent piece. It is decorated with the same beautiful flora and scrolls. One side of the base has the ram-headed Greek god Zeus painted and the other has a head in a cartouche. Old tight hairline on the base; please see pictures.
