Large 16" vase with pierced lid. Faience Manufacturing Company (FMC) Greenpoint, Brooklyn New York; circa 1885-1888.

This is a large faience vase with pierced lid, produced and decorated by the Faience Manufacturing Company (FMC) in Greenpoint, Brooklyn New York; circa 1885-1888.

This vase displays purple-throat orchids with gold edged foliage, very reflective of Edward Lycett's best work and artistic talents while at FMCo. The back of the vase is equally decorated with wispy grasses and foliage.

The vase stands 16" high overall, is 9" wide and boasts a plump 26" circumference. The vase is in excellent condition; worthy of a special private collection or public exhibit. The original FMCo paper tag with the decorating number (235) are still affixed to the base of the vase . All of the FMCo maker's marks are correct. The paper tag also indicates the mold number (1074) which is impressed on the base as well.

The highly detailed and brightly decorated vase displays a synthesis of strong Japanese influences which are characteristic of the Aesthetic Movement. The piece was likely designed and decorated by Edward Lycett personally. Lycett was known to be the primary artistic designer for the firm during this time of operation.

The hand formed cover and finial are technically outstanding. Complex details of reticulated floral's and scrolls are displayed. The flat-finished gold paste is lavish and generous. There is virtually no gold loss on the entire vase.

In the 1880's head vase designer Edward Lycett worked closely with specialty retailers including Tiffany & Company. He focused his efforts on bulbous vases and ewers with Moorish-style filigree lids, dolphin handles, gilded textures and Japanese motifs.
