Beautiful Florentine Statue / Figurine of Romeo & Juliet No. 933 ~ by Casper Hennecke Milwaukee 1865- 1887

This is a wonderful figurine of Romeo & Juliet by C. ( Casper ) Hennecke Company. Hennecke's art productions were consistently praised for their high quality. This piece is listed in his Catalog No. 5 Hennecke's Florentine Statuary on page 27.The caption under the figurine states: All Shakespeare's women, being essentially women, either love or have loved, or are capable of loving, but Juliet is love itself. The passion is her state of being, and out of it she has no existence. It is the soul within her soul: the pulse within her heart; the life-blood along her veins, `blending with every atom of her frame.' Romeo, her lover, is the son of Montague, and Juliet the daughter of Capulet, Between the two houses of Montague and Capulet there existed a deadly feud.

We are not sure if the gold paint that covers the entire piece has been added or original. According to the catalog this gold/bronze finish was option #3. There are a few nicks on the base and a factory flaw or possibly a break on one of Juliet's hands. The wires of the inner construction holding Romeo's and Juliet's hands together prevented any severe damage The feather plum on Romeo's hat is also missing. Please see pictures for condition.

Casper Hennecke Company of Milwaukee, executed fine statuary productions in various styles, including Art Nouveau. A company catalog boasts "Hennecke's statuary enjoys the distinction of being the best production of modern manufacture. It represents the highest art attainments, and is not equaled by other makers, American or foreign. Their productions are famous for the fine execution of detail and perfection in finish. All the delicate lines of the original models are carefully retained, and for the decorating they employed only European artists of the greatest ability." The factory itself was established in 1865, and when Mr. Hennecke died, in 1892, he was succeeded in the presidency of the firm by his wife. Projecting parts of delicately modeled pieces are made entirely of metal, cast into the composition of the statue proper, making breakage in transit almost impossible" The plaster is superimposed on an underlying structure of iron, which gave both stability to the artist when fashioning it as well as to the sender when shipping it. Another claim was that "Hennecke's statuary is decorated in artistic color effects. The custom of applying to modern statuary a plain [monochromatic] tint has been superseded by this decoration.
