Great 132 Yr Old English Majolica Strawberry Server Dish ~ Wedgwood Staffordshire England ca 1878

The hot house trend created a secondary craze for strawberries back in the day. Tableware was created specifically for serving the fruit was manufactured in many elegant styles, generally decorated with painted or molded strawberry plants. This little dish has been designed by the famous Wedgwood factory. They have used a white background with a raised design that resembles straw and a few golden wheat heads. On each side of the dish is a group of red berries and olive green leaves. The berries have runners going across the dish connecting the groups. On the ends of the dish are matching green bows that extend down onto the dish. The green color is continued around the rim of this beautiful old piece tying the colors together nicely. This dish has a rim repair; please see pictures. IT IS RARE TO FIND OLDER MAJOLICA IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IF PRESENT IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE. This piece is shown in the Majolica American & European Wares Book by Snyder & Bockol on page 20.
